A couple of winters ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda Owen, also known as The Yorkshire Shepherdess, for a cold morning filming at Llyn Gwynant. We collaborated on a feature about the delights of winter swimming in Eryri / Snowdonia for the first episode of a week-long special 'Winter on the Farm'.
Amanda is a lovely, genuine woman, so easy to talk to and down to earth in her outlook on life, we shared a swim in a beautifully calm Gwynant and then shivered our way through several takes on our passion for outdoor swimming. It's not easy to concentrate on talking when you are scared of throwing hot coffee down yourself on camera.
We had an all-female crew that day, which was a first! Film and TV often have more males in roles than females so it was great to see the gender shift on this shoot.
Amanda shared her own swimming experiences and is lucky enough to have access to lakes on the land she farms in Yorkshire. She shared photos of these and the swimming looked just divine!
Now my Dear Old Dad is probably Amanda's No.1 fan and she was kind enough to give him a signed copy of her latest book, which wasn't only written by his favourite farmer but was full of recipes which is his favourite kind of book! I was supposed to save it and give it to him for Christmas but I couldn't wait that long. Look how happy he was!!
This feature was recently shown again in a new program 'A Yorkshire Farm' on Channel 5 you can watch either of these programs on My5 via the links below.
